AI

cari ann shim sham* began her journey with artificial intelligence by interrogating its inherent bias based on its early development by mostly white men. She trained her own neural networks for diversity, inclusivity, and accessibility, focusing on how technology can create efficiency and allow us all more time for rest. Early in her career, she recognized the potential of AI to act not just as a tool but as a refuge in the creative process.

In 2021, cari ann developed an AI curator for the Museum of Wild and Newfangled Art’s exhibition, "This Show is Curated by a Machine." with her team joey zaza and IV (Ivan Pravdin). This project emerged as a direct response to a commissioned work by the Whitney Museum titled "The Next Biennial Should Be Curated by a Machine." Through this project, cari ann demonstrated how AI could be utilized to curate and shape artistic narratives, raising questions about authorship, creativity, and the role of trainning machine learning algorithms for bias towards inclusivity and diversity in art selection and presentation. This innovative approach garnered attention and prompted discussions about the future of curatorial practices in contemporary art.

Building on her exploration of AI, cari ann is currently developing an AI choreographer as part of her project, dance prompts. This initiative aims to integrate AI into the choreographic process, allowing artists to collaborate with intelligent systems to generate and inspire new movement languages biased towards inclusivity and accessibility. This project not only serves as a creative tool but also as an educational resource as she designs a curriculum for collaborating with AI, set to be implemented at NYU, where she teaches as a Full Arts Professor of Dance and Technology.

cari ann has also ventured into generative AI art, creating multiple projects on Emprops, a generative AI marketplace that utilizes a proprietary stable diffusion model and mints work to the Ethereum and Tezos blockchains. Through her work on this platform, she explores the creative potential of AI-driven algorithms to generate unique artistic outcomes in her projects fungitari 🍄 🕹️,~tilde~, and dance prompts, reinforcing the notion that AI can be a vital partner in the creative process rather than a mere technical aid.

In addition to her artistic projects, cari ann integrates energy work with her AI practice, using AI as an oracle to navigate the collective memory field and facilitate personal and communal healing rituals. This holistic approach underscores her belief in the interconnectedness of technology, art, and spirituality, as she seeks to use AI not only for artistic innovation but also for enhancing emotional and spiritual well-being.

Throughout her career, cari ann has been an advocate for the responsible and ethical use of AI in the arts. She has shared her insights and experiences at various conferences and panels, including her notable appearance at the Santa Fe Workshops panel on the Future of Photography. In her talks, she addresses the implications of integrating AI into artistic practices, urging fellow artists and technologists to consider both the benefits and challenges of these emerging technologies.

As she continues her work at NYU Tisch School of the Arts and the Museum of Wild and Newfangled Art and beyond, cari ann remains committed to pushing the boundaries of what is possible with AI in the arts. She envisions a future where artists and technologists collaborate seamlessly, creating innovative works that inspire reflection, optimism, efficiency that allows for rest and community development of neural networks for the highest good of all.
